PLANTING HOPE, HARVESTING FUTURES KNOWLEDGE TREE Literacy Drive for Underprivileged Street Children

In a moving affirmation of collective compassion and the unwavering power of education, the IHA Foundation, in association with Calcutta SEED, hosted a special program at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary on 2nd May 2025. The occasion marked the distribution of educational kits to children enrolled under the new session in the Knowledge Tree—a transformative outreach initiative developed and nurtured by the IHA Foundation in collaboration with Calcutta SEED, reaching out to children of Mutthias, local food kiosk owners, and daily wage earners from Burra Bazaar and nearby areas.

These children, raised amidst hardship yet brimming with unspoken dreams, have been receiving holistic education, care, and nourishment of spirit through the Knowledge Tree for the past few years. The educational kits distributed included books, notebooks, stationery, school bags, water bottles, pens, and hygiene essentials—each item representing not just a supply, but a signal of belief: belief in their potential, their right to learn, and their capacity to rise. The success of this distribution was made possible by the tireless efforts and unwavering dedication of Shri Gagan Khanna, Patron of IHA Foundation, whose compassion continues to illuminate countless lives. The silent service of such individuals speaks volumes, turning hope into action where it’s needed most.

As part of the wider mission of the IHA Foundation, the mothers and women of these communities are also being empowered through vocational training programs in sewing and computer literacy. These sessions, delivered with patience and purpose, are helping women reclaim agency over their lives—enabling them to earn, support their families, and stand tall with dignity.

It is not just education; it is liberation in its most human form—quietly rewriting the story of entire households.

The event was graced by Janab Ahmed Hassan, Chairman, West Bengal Minorities Commission, who deeply appreciated the efforts of both organizations and pledged the Commission’s continued support in ensuring inclusive, grassroots-driven educational development. For several years, the IHA Foundation has not only supported but helped shape and expand the Knowledge Tree project, driven by its mission to ensure that no child is ever denied the right to dream, to learn, and to thrive.

"Education is the most powerful seed we can plant in the heart of a child. Through every book we offer and every pencil we place into their hands, we are lighting a fire that cannot be put out. These are the roots of future leaders—resilient, compassionate, and courageous," said Satnam Singh Ahluwalia, Chairman, IHA Foundation. "The Knowledge Tree was born from the belief that every child, no matter how humble their beginning, deserves the light of learning. Today, we are not just distributing kits—we are renewing hope, and watching it take root in the hearts of our children.", said Rev. Dr. Franklin Menezes, Secretary, Calcutta SEED,This event was not just a ceremony—it was a living testament to what is possible when purpose meets compassion, and when a community comes together to believe in the power of every child’s dream.
