KOLKATA SIKH APPRECIATED AND HONOURED BY
Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib by upholding the Tenets of
Sikhism in the recent Kirpan ordeal at Bangkok, Thailand
In a powerful gesture of solidarity and spiritual encouragement, Singh Sahib Giani Kuldeep
Singh Ji Gargaj, the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the supreme temporal seat of Sikhs across
the world, met with Sardar Satnam Singh Ahluwalia,a member of the West Bengal Minorities
Commission, General Secretary Gurdwara Behala Kolkata and Chairman of IHA Foundation, who
was at the center of a recent international religious rights violation involving his Kirpan at a
leading five-star hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.
The meeting took place at the precincts of Sri Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar, where Jathedar
Sahib discussed in detail to the ordeal faced by Satnam Singh Ahluwalia on 12th April 2025—a
day of immense significance to the Sikh community, as it marked Khalsa Sajna Diwas. Despite
being denied hotel check-in and subjected to hours of humiliation for carrying the Kirpan, a
sacred article of Sikh faith, Satnam Singh Ahluwalia stood firm and did not compromise on his
religious principles.
Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Ji Gargaj, while honouring Satnam Singh Ahluwalia, praised his
unyielding commitment to Sikh tenets and Sikh identity. He remarked, "If every Sikh stands with
similar conviction for the Khalsa Panth, the destiny of the Sikhs across the Globe can indeed be
transformed.”
In the days following the incident, Satnam Singh Ahluwalia had written detailed letters to the
Prime Ministers, Ambassadors, and Religious Authorities of both India and Thailand, demanding
accountability and cultural sensitivity. His relentless efforts led to a formal written apology from
the Hotel Authorities.
Jathedar Sahib’s appreciation comes at a critical juncture, as global Sikh voices continue to call
for greater awareness and respect for Sikh articles of faith, especially in countries where the
Sikh community plays a vital socio-economic role. The Akal Takht’s endorsement of Satnam
Singh Ahluwalia stand is both a reassurance to the Sikh diaspora and a reaffirmation that
religious identity must never be surrendered in the face of ignorance or institutional apathy.
Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee
(SGPC), representative also met with Sardar Satnam Singh Ahluwalia and expressed deep
concern over the incident. The SGPC has taken serious cognizance of the matter and assured
that they will formally raise the issue with the Ambassador of Thailand. Furthermore, they will
write to the Department of Religious Affairs, Thailand, urging them to take appropriate steps to
ensure that no Sikh—nor any individual practicing their faith—is ever subjected to such
disrespect or discrimination again.
“When I stood alone in that foreign land, facing humiliation for simply living my faith, I drew
strength from the teachings of our Gurus. But today, to receive the blessings and
encouragement of the Jathedar Sahib of Sri Akal Takht Sahib is not just personal validation—it is
a moment of collective pride for every Sikh who has ever felt cornered for their identity. This
honour is a reminder that the Kirpan is not just steel—it is spirit. It is not just a symbol—it is
sovereignty. And no power in the world can make us bow when we stand rooted in our truth.
The issue was never just about me—it was about dignity, rights, and the pride of every Sikh
who carries the Kirpan with love and reverence.”, said Satnam Singh Ahluwalia Member of the
West Bengal Minorities Commission, General Secretary Gurdwara Behala Kolkata and Chairman
of IHA Foundation
