IHA Foundation Feeding the Hungry of Kolkata with Love and Compassion
IHA Foundation has always been at the forefront of championing the cause of ensuring that no
one sleeps hungry in Kolkata, the pledge. Driven by this unwavering commitment, IHA
Foundation introduced the concept of Food on Wheels during the challenging days of the
pandemic—a lifeline for the needy and underprivileged when they needed it most. What began
as a heartfelt response to a crisis has now evolved into a passionate mission, deeply rooted in
compassion and selfless service. Inspired by the timeless principles of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji,
this initiative has become a beacon of hope, delivering nourishment and dignity to countless
souls across the city, one meal at a time.
As we commemorated the 555th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, IHA Foundation
undertook a profoundly significant initiative as a humble tribute to this historic occasion. With a
pledge to serve 5,500 meals over the course of a week leading up to the Prakash Purab, the
Foundation embraced the spirit of Langar Seva—a tradition of selfless service and communal
meal established by Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji himself. This sacred tradition, which began humbly
with just 20 rupees, has transcended centuries, feeding countless individuals across the globe,
irrespective of caste, creed, or faith. Fittingly, our pledge to serve meals was both a tribute to
the first Guru of the Sikhs and a continuation of his revolutionary legacy.
Through the tireless efforts of our dedicated volunteers, generous donors, and supportive well-
wishers, we not only fulfilled this pledge but surpassed it, serving 5,623 meals to the hungry
and needy across Kolkata. Meals were distributed outside hospitals and railway stations,
providing solace and sustenance to patient families, caregivers, daily wage workers, and others
in need. To complement these efforts, fruits were distributed to patients offering nourishment
and a heartfelt gesture of warmth and compassion.
“This initiative was deeply significant, connecting us to the spiritual and social legacy of Sri Guru
Nanak Dev Ji. His teachings—best captured in the sacred words “Awal Allah Noor Upaya, Kudrat
Ke Sab Bande”—remind us that all of humanity is one, created from the same divine light. Guru
Nanak Dev Ji’s revolutionary concept of Langar challenged societal hierarchies and asserted the
fundamental equality of all human beings. Today, this tradition feeds millions daily,
transcending barriers of religion, nationality, and status. It inspires us to integrate the values of
Langar and Seva—selfless service and sharing—into our way of life.”, said Satnam Singh
Ahluwalia, Chairman IHA Foundation.
The significance of this initiative is further amplified when viewed in the context of IHA
Foundation’s ongoing journey. Since April 2020, we have completed the monumental milestone
of serving more than 50 lakh meals, standing as a testament to the power of collective
compassion. Additionally, we have been tirelessly supporting senior citizens by providing
monthly ration packets, ensuring their dignity and sustenance during challenging times.
Looking ahead, we are driven by a mission to expand our reach and impact. With a vision of
creating a Hunger-Free Kolkata, Hunger-Free India, and Hunger-Free World, we are reorganizing
and inviting more individuals, organizations, and communities to join us in this sacred
endeavor. Together, we can amplify the spirit of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings, ensuring
that no one sleeps hungry and every soul feels the warmth of shared humanity.
"In today’s times, as the world grapples with inequality, division, and despair, Sri Guru Nanak
Dev Ji’s timeless message shines brighter than ever: no one should go hungry or feel excluded.
On the 555th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, we didn’t just serve meals; we shared
love, dignity, and hope. Every smile we witnessed was a testament to the Guru’s vision—a
world where humanity stands united beyond divisions. This isn’t just service; it’s our way of
keeping the Guru’s light alive in every heart we touch,” said Satnam Singh Ahluwalia, Chairman,
IHA Foundation.
Further Satnam Singh Ahluwalia, Chairman, IHA Foundation added “As we reflect on this sacred
occasion, we at IHA Foundation reaffirm our commitment to service, compassion, and equality.
Inspired by the Guru who showed us the way, we pledge to continue this journey, striving to
build a world where no one goes hungry, and every person is embraced with love and respect.
May the light of Guru Nanak Dev Ji guide us all in creating a brighter, more inclusive future.”
