After cyclone YAAS ravaged Bengal, and a day later the tail of YAAS raged through Kolkata on Thursday evening, many bustees, shanties, sheds in Kolkata and suburbs were massively affected. There were also reports of widespread destruction from heavy rain, powerful winds and storm surges in low-lying areas of South 24 Parganas.
IHA Foundation under the direction of its Chairman Satnam Singh Ahluwalia, immediately went into action and organized Cyclone Relief Camps in Sunderban, Diamond Harbour and parts of Kolkata like Tiljala, Topsia, Tangra and other adjacent bustees, shanties and temporary shelters.
Many people’s roofs were blown away or destroyed by the rains, which led to loss of personal belongings and other essential items from their small hutments. We provided 500 families with tarpaulins, dry ration like Muri, Gur, Chira, and water, apart from the above we assessed the impact and their requirements, which shall be immediately provided to them.
Even though Kolkata and its neighborhood remained largely unaffected by the cyclonic winds or torrential rains associated with cyclones as YAAS shifted away, the City was affected by the torrential rains, which affected the people still living under temporary shelters.
IHA Foundation teams were sent immediately to Amlamethi, Marhurakhanda and Satya Narayanpur, Gosaba block of Sunderbans, where relief material, which was immediately required like Dry Ration, Tarpaulin, Baby food was provided to the people, our next lot of relief material like Clothes, Essentials and Ration Kits consisting of Rice, Dal, Oil, Masalas etc is also being dispatched to these villages.
